Krishna and Sudama

We are so blessed to have grown up listening to such beautiful stories from our Hindu scriptures. They have such beautiful messages if we try to learn from them.

Naa Sarpe Hai Pagri Naa Tan Pe Hai Jaama,
Batado Kanhaiya Ko Naam Hai Sudama।
Ek Baar Mohan Se Ja Kar Ke Kahdo,
Ke Milne Sakha Badnasib Aa Gaya Hai।
Sunte Hi Doude Chale Aaye Mohan,
Lagaya Gale Se Sudama Ko Mohan।

Krishna Sudama's friendship is one such story. When Sudama came to visit Shri Krishna, he had nothing to offer to him. He wasn't even sure that his old friend would recognize him. He went on the insistence of his wife as they were facing extreme poverty. Na sar pe hai pagri means having no ego. Na tan pe hai jaama means no care about how he looked. And we all know how Shri Krishna not only met him with open arms but also washed his feet with tears and hugged him. Sudama was embarrassed to bring just a handful of rice, an insignificant gift for his old friend, for he couldn't afford anything else.  However, Shri Krishna not only accepted the humble gift but also offered him everything and anything life could offer.

Now, in a spiritual sense, the story symbolizes that when you let go of your ego, when you let go of your mind-made construct and self-serving narrative, when you let go of your past and future, your memories and desires, what remains is just a pure awareness, a pure presence, a pure consciousness. Once you surrender your illusionary self, your ego, and your ever-restless mind to the Supreme, the Universe, the omnipresent God, you get all the blessings, all the bliss, and all the abundance of life. As it is, our ego is not what we are born with. It’s acquired later as we grow. By surrendering our ego, we are just surrendering what was never ours, to begin with, to become who we are, a pure consciousness. And as an individual consciousness, we can align with the Universal Consciousness.  By becoming nothing, you become everything. By letting go of your small mind, you let a higher mind flow through you.

Neuroscientifically speaking, once we let go of our addiction to the ego as well as thinking and analysing and thereby freeing ourselves from the egoist mind by staying in the present moment, we can gain access to the subconscious mind. Our conscious awareness is our saarthi, our own Krishna, who controls our mind and senses. By being aware and not letting our egoic self cloud our vision, we can let our subconscious mind and innate intelligence heal us and guide our conscious mind toward coherence, leading to wholeness, blissfulness, and gratefulness.

According to the quantum model, the electromagnetic energy we emit through our positive emotions like bliss, love, grace, and gratitude resonates with similar energy in the universe. This resonance creates a ripple effect, bringing more of the same positive energy into our lives. When we let go of our ego, we let go of our pain, anxiety, depression, and misery, something that resonates with similar negative energy, thus perpetuating the cycle further. Paradoxically, our loss is our gain. You gain the world by letting go of your illusionary self.
The loss of ego is the gain of our eternal self.

The story very beautifully signifies that rather than being victims of our circumstances, we can become a master of our destiny.  🙏
